What is a viaduct?

A viaduct is a long multi-span structure carrying a road or railway over a valley, river, or other wide obstacle. Unlike a standard bridge, which crosses a single gap, a viaduct uses a series of arches or spans supported by tall piers to maintain a level route across much wider terrain. The most consistent difference is scale and purpose. Viaducts are typically longer, involve more spans, and were built specifically to maintain a level route across terrain that would otherwise require a steep descent into and climb out of a valley.

Why were viaducts built?

Most UK viaducts date from the Victorian railway era, roughly 1830 to 1900. Engineers faced a specific challenge: steam locomotives struggled with steep gradients, so rather than take a railway line up and down across hills, engineers built tall multi-arch structures to carry the track across valleys at a consistent height.

Road viaducts came later, mainly during the motorway-building era of the 1960s and 1970s, for the same reason. Keeping a major road level across difficult terrain reduces fuel consumption, travel times, and the risk of accidents on steep descents.

Famous UK viaducts

The UK has some of the most photographed viaducts in the world:

Driving over a viaduct

Many road viaducts are driven over daily without drivers realising they are on one. Motorway sections crossing river valleys, urban flyover sections, and dual carriageway bridges across wide floodplains may all technically be viaducts. Examples include parts of the M62 in West Yorkshire and sections of the A1(M).

The rules on a road viaduct are the same as any other road. Speed limits apply. Stopping is not permitted unless in an emergency. How long do viaducts last?

Victorian masonry arch viaducts built in the 1840s and 1850s are still in daily use with ongoing maintenance. The arch distributes load very efficiently, and brick and stone have proved more resistant to long-term deterioration than early concrete alternatives.

Modern concrete and steel viaducts require a different maintenance regime. Inspection cycles, waterproofing of deck joints, and expansion joint treatment are the main recurring tasks.
