What is
weekend van insurance?

Weekend van insurance is an easy and efficient way to get comprehensive insurance on a van for a couple of days over the weekend.

Weekends and errands go hand in hand and sometimes your day-to-day car just won't cut it, and you find yourself needing to borrow a van for a couple of days - this is where a temporary van insurance policy could really help out.

A weekend van insurance policy is perfect for those weekends where you're looking to be productive - whether that's moving house, helping a friend move house, picking up a larger purchase like furniture pieces, or picking up supplies for redecorating.

When you're borrowing someone else's van for the weekend, it's not just your No Claims Bonus that's protected under a temporary insurance policy, theirs will be too, so there's advantages all around.

Likewise, maybe it's just a van that you drive occasionally when it's needed and an annual policy might be an expense that could be avoided. Either way, temporary van insurance is a great way to get comprehensive cover for as long as you need, whenever you need it - whatever the reasons:

How much does weekend van insurance cost?

The premium you’ll pay for your weekend van insurance will depend on several factors, including your age, driving experience, location, the time and date you need cover, the van you’ll be driving, and how long you need to be insured for.

If you only need to drive a van for a short period, a temporary weekend van insurance policy can be an affordable and flexible option. However, keep in mind that the longer the duration of your cover, the higher the cost is likely to be.

You can take out multiple weekend van insurance policies throughout the year, especially if your driving needs are occasional or vary. But if you find yourself regularly using the same van, switching to an annual van insurance policy could work out more cost effective in the long run.

You can get weekend van insurance by the hour, daily, weekly or even up to 28 days.

How can you get cheap weekend van insurance?

In order to get the cheapest van insurance for the weekend: only pay for the time you actually need to drive.

One of the biggest advantages of a weekend insurance policy is its flexibility. You can start your cover at the exact moment you need to drive and set it to end as soon as you're done. This way, you're not paying for unused time, keeping your costs as low as possible.

By insuring yourself on a van only for the weekend; whether it’s for a quick delivery, a weekend move, or a short work project, you avoid the higher costs of unnecessary, longer-term policies.

Weekend van insurance FAQs

Can you get weekend van insurance on a van you hire?

No you can't take out weekend van insurance on a hired van. Short term weekend insurance allows you to borrow a van and insure it, rather than insure a hired van.

Can I use a weekend policy to make deliveries?

You’re only insured for the carriage of your own goods. This means it's suitable for personal use or transporting your own tools and equipment. It does not cover any form of hire or reward, including courier work, delivery driving, or using the van as part of a delivery service. If you're earning money from transporting goods, you'll need specialist commercial or courier insurance instead.

Can I drive a van I've just bought without getting insurance?

You cannot legally drive a new van home without insurance. If you have an accident you won't be insured, even if it is new and you haven't sorted a new policy yet. Short term weekend van insurance is very easy to set up from anywhere, so you want to avoid ever driving without the appropriate insurance required by law.

Can I get temporary commercial vehicle insurance as a new driver?

To get weekend van insurance from us at Covertime, you'll need to have a full UK driving licence for at least 12 months.

What happens if I need to extend my cover past the weekend?

Need more than the weekend? No problem - currently our policies are not able to be extended or renewed, but if you need more time you can get a fresh quote anytime online for however long you need!

Can I take out multiple weekend van insurance policies in one year?

Yes you can take out multiple weekend van insurance policies in a year, but there will come a point that if you're always insuring the same van, that an annual policy would be more cost-effective.
