How much does monthly temporary car insurance cost?

The cost of one month car insurance depends on a few factors, including:

  • The car you’re insuring
  • Your driving history and licence details
  • When the cover starts
  • How long you need the policy for (up to 28 days)

Monthly car insurance can work out more cost-effective than taking out multiple short policies, especially if you need cover for several weeks.

When you get a quote, we calculate your premium based on your individual circumstances, so you’re paying a price that reflects your specific risk profile.

If a shorter period is enough, two week car insurance covers exactly 14 days - lower cost for a more defined window.

Everything you need to know about monthly car insurance

You can get a monthly car insurance policy for up to 28 days.

Also known as car insurance for one month or 28 days car insurance, monthly cover is ideal when you need insurance for longer than a few days but don’t want to take out a full 12-month policy. You choose exactly when your cover starts and ends, so you only pay for the time you need.

Whether you're borrowing a car, lending a car or simply need one month car insurance only, this flexible option helps you get on the road quickly and with confidence.

Monthly car insurance is a simple way to get insured to drive in many situations:

Who needs monthly car insurance?

Monthly cover is a convenient option for drivers who like a little flexibility in their lives.

You might need one month car insurance if:

  • You’re between annual policies
  • You’ve recently bought a car and haven’t arranged yearly cover yet
  • You’re borrowing a car for several weeks
  • You’re travelling within the UK for work
  • You want temporary flexibility without long-term commitment

Being able to take out car insurance for 1 month gives you breathing space without locking you into a year-long agreement.

The full range of durations from one hour to 28 days is explained on our temporary car insurance page.

Monthly car insurance vs an annual policy — which is right for you?

The main difference is commitment and context. An annual policy assumes you will drive the same car, from the same address, for the full 12 months. A monthly temporary policy — which runs for up to 28 days — makes no such assumption.

When monthly works better than annual

  • You are between cars and need cover while you find the right one
  • You are using a second car for a specific period — a summer project car, a hire vehicle while yours is being repaired
  • You have just returned from abroad and need cover before your previous insurer renews
  • You are testing whether you actually use a car enough to justify an annual policy
  • You need to cover someone else's car for a defined stretch without adding to their annual premium

What annual insurance offers that monthly does not

  • A no-claims discount that builds each year — monthly temporary cover does not accumulate NCD
  • Often cheaper per day once you have a few years of driving history
  • Continuous cover without the need to renew manually

The practical test

If you need a car for more than three or four months in a year, annual cover is almost always more economical. If you have a specific window — a month-long project, a transitional period, a gap between policies — monthly temporary insurance is the cleaner option. It costs nothing after the period ends and does not tie you to a 12-month contract. For shorter windows within that range, the full set of durations from one day to 28 days is on our temporary car insurance page.

Monthly car insurance FAQs

Can I get car insurance for a month?

If you're after car insurance for just a month, then it's possible with our monthly car insurance for 28 days.

You can take out a comprehensive car insurance policy with Covertime for an hour, a day, a week, two weeks and even up to 28 days if that's what you need. You get to decide how long you need cover and not commit to a minute more than necessary.

How will I know when my cover expires?

When you take out monthly car insurance with Covertime you'll always know the date, time and how long you're covered for.

As soon as you've purchased your monthly insurance policy, we'll send you a policy confirmation email which contains a link to access and download all of your policy documents. This email and those documents will tell you absolutely everything you need to know about your monthly car insurance cover.

We’ll also send you a reminder before your cover is about to expire, so you’ll never be caught out without your insurance in place.

I already have an annual policy on my own car, do I really need to get insurance to drive a different car?

If you’re borrowing someone else’s car, it is a legal requirement to make sure you are correctly insured.

Even if their car is insured already, that doesn’t mean that you are personally insured to drive it, and the same principle applies if you already have a car insurance policy in place – you shouldn’t assume you’re covered to drive someone else’s car.

Make sure you know what's covered on your annual policy by reviewing your policy documents. Whilst some comprehensive annual policies can provide DOC (Drive Other Cars) cover, this is not always the norm and does often come with a few caveats.

Temporary or short-term car insurance can be a simple and often cost-effective way to get insured to drive someone else’s car for a month.

If you're looking to borrow the car for a short period of time or just a one-off, temporary car insurance is comprehensive, and it won’t affect your no claims bonus which is certainly a bonus in itself!

What happens if I need to extend my cover?

At the moment our policies cannot be extended and do not renew. Don't worry though, we won't stand between you and the open road - you can purchase a new policy for another month or just a few more hours by getting a fresh quote anytime, for however long you need it.

Does monthly car insurance include breakdown cover?

Our temporary car insurance policies do not currently include breakdown cover.

What happens if I need to cancel my monthly insurance policy?

You are entitled to cancel your policy at any time.

You can cancel your policy by getting in touch with our team, either via our Live Chat or you can email us.

It's important to bear in mind though that, unlike annual insurance, short period insurance policies of less than one months’ duration are not subject to the 14-day cooling off period. This is in line with the rules set by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Our refund policy is dependent on whether the cover has started.

Policies not yet started - if you let us know before the policy starts and ask us to cancel your policy, you may be entitled to receive a full refund. Please contact us as soon as possible and our team can look into this for you.

Policies where the cover has started - if you contact us after the policy has started and the cover is in force, whilst we can cancel the policy for you there will be no refund due to you. This is highlighted to you before you purchase the policy.

Will my no claims bonus be protected?

Absolutely! One of the convenient advantages to monthly car insurance is that it protects your existing No Claims Bonus, as well as the owner of the car you're borrowing.

Can I use monthly insurance to borrow my friend's car?

As long as you have the driver's permission, you can absolutely use monthly car insurance to borrow a car.

Did you know?

Driving other cars using an annual policy usually only insures you for Third Party claims, meaning damage to the car you are driving is not covered.
