How many times can you take the theory test?

There is no legal limit on how many times you can take the driving theory test. You can attempt it as many times as you need until you pass. After a fail, you must wait at least three clear working days before rebooking. Here is everything you need to know about multiple attempts and how to make the most of a resit.

Is there a limit on theory test attempts?

No. The DVSA places no maximum on the number of times you can sit the theory test. Each attempt requires a separate booking and a separate fee - currently £23 for a car theory test. There is no record of the number of attempts made visible on your driving licence or any publicly accessible system. When you pass, the pass certificate is issued in the same form regardless of how many attempts it took.

How long do you have to wait between attempts?

You must wait at least three clear working days after a fail before you can rebook. The three days run from the day of the fail - if you fail on a Monday, Tuesday through Thursday are the three clear working days, meaning Friday is the earliest you could sit again (assuming no bank holidays fall in the gap).

There is no upper limit on how long you can wait before rebooking. However, once you pass, the certificate is valid for two years. If you are early in the learning process, keep in mind that the two-year clock starts from when you pass, not when you first attempted the test.

What does a fail cover?

Both sections of the theory test - the multiple choice section (50 questions, pass mark 43) and the hazard perception section (14 clips, pass mark 44 out of 75) - must be passed on the same sitting. If you pass the multiple choice but fail the hazard perception, or vice versa, the overall result is a fail and both sections must be taken again. You cannot carry a passing section score forward to your next attempt.

The DVSA provides a result sheet at the end of the test showing your score in each section and, for the multiple choice section, which topic categories you answered incorrectly. This feedback is more useful than it might seem - it identifies exactly where to focus revision before resitting.

How to approach a resit

A resit that repeats the same preparation tends to produce the same result. Use the fail to diagnose the problem before rebooking.

For the multiple choice section: use the topic breakdown on your result sheet. Identify the categories where you scored poorly and focus revision there. If you failed with a score close to 43, the gap may be narrow - targeted revision of two or three weak areas can be enough. If the score was significantly lower, broader revision is needed.

For the hazard perception section: failing usually means one of three things - clicking too late, clicking before the scoring window opens, or triggering the random clicking penalty through excessive clicking. Official practice platforms that show whether your click was in the scoring window help identify which problem you have. Each requires a different fix.

Do not rebook too quickly. The three-day minimum is not a suggested revision period. Most candidates who resit within three to four days without changing their preparation fail again. One to two weeks of focused, targeted practice between attempts is more likely to produce a pass.

Does a theory test fail affect anything else?

No. A fail does not appear on your provisional licence, does not affect your insurance, and does not change your right to drive as a supervised learner on public roads. It is an entry requirement for booking the practical test and nothing more.

You can continue taking driving lessons and private practice sessions regardless of how many theory test attempts you have made.

Booking the theory test again

You rebook through the DVSA's online booking system. You will need your provisional licence number and the payment for the fee. Slots are typically available within one to two weeks at most centres, though busier urban test centres may have longer waiting times.

Before your resit, our guide to how to book the driving theory test covers the full booking process and what to bring on the day.

Once you have passed the theory test and start building hours towards the practical, learner driver insurance provides cover for private practice in a car that is not yours, without affecting the owner's annual policy or no-claims bonus.

How many attempts do most people need?

There is no published DVSA breakdown of average attempts per candidate. Anecdotally, most candidates pass within one or two attempts. The hazard perception section has a higher fail rate than the multiple choice section - candidates who pass the multiple choice comfortably but fail the hazard perception often need only one targeted resit focused on timing and technique rather than knowledge. A fail with a multiple choice score well below 43 suggests broader revision is needed and typically requires more preparation time before resitting.

Frequently asked questions

How many times can I take the theory test?

As many times as you need. There is no maximum number of attempts. Each attempt requires a new booking and fee payment of £23.

How long must I wait between theory test attempts?

At least three clear working days after a fail. There is no upper limit on how long you can wait before rebooking.

If I pass the multiple choice but fail the hazard perception, can I carry the pass forward?

No. Both sections must be passed on the same sitting. A fail in either section means the whole test is a fail, and both sections must be taken again.

Does a theory test fail affect my driving licence or insurance?

No. A fail is not recorded on your licence and does not affect any insurance you hold or your right to drive as a supervised learner.

How long is a theory test pass valid for?

Two years from the date you passed. If the practical test is not passed within two years, the theory certificate expires and must be resat before another practical can be booked.
