Bus lanes UK: who can use them and when
Bus lanes are marked with a bold white B on the road surface and bordered by a solid white line. Most drivers assume they are off-limits to everyone except buses - but taxis, cyclists, and sometimes motorcycles are also permitted. Hours matter too: many bus lanes only operate during peak periods, and outside those times the lane is open to all traffic.
What is a bus lane?
A bus lane is a section of road reserved for certain vehicle types during set hours. It is shown by a solid white line on the left of the lane and the letter B painted on the road surface. Signs at the start of the bus lane show which vehicles are permitted and during what hours. Where no hours are shown on the sign, the restriction applies at all times.
Bus lanes typically run in the same direction as general traffic. Contraflow bus lanes on one-way streets run against the general flow - they are marked clearly with cycle symbols and directional arrows.
Which vehicles can use a bus lane?
The sign at the start of the bus lane sets out who is permitted. Buses are always allowed. Beyond that, the rules depend on the specific lane:
- Licensed taxis are permitted in most UK bus lanes, including all London bus lanes
- Cyclists are permitted to use almost all bus lanes under the Highway Code, regardless of whether shown on the sign
- Motorcycles are permitted in some areas where the local authority has agreed it - the sign will confirm
- Private hire vehicles (such as those dispatched through ride-hailing apps) are not automatically permitted; rules vary by council
If a vehicle type is not shown on the sign, it is not permitted during the restricted hours.
Bus lane hours of operation
Many bus lanes only operate during peak hours - typically morning and evening rush periods. The sign at the start of the lane gives specific times, for example "Mon-Sat 7am-10am, 4pm-7pm". Between those times, all vehicles can use the lane freely.
Some bus lanes, particularly in city centres and London, operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The phrase "at any time" on the sign, or no hours being shown at all, indicates a round-the-clock restriction.
Can vans use bus lanes?
Vans and goods vehicles cannot use bus lanes during restricted hours. The type and size of the vehicle makes no difference - if it is not listed on the sign, it cannot enter. Our guide to van bus lane rules explains this in more detail, including the implications for delivery drivers.

Fines for driving in a bus lane
Bus lane enforcement is mainly camera-based. Cameras log the vehicle registration, time, and footage automatically. A Penalty Charge Notice is then issued to the registered keeper.
In London, the fine is £160, reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days. Outside London, fines typically range from £60 to £90 depending on the council. If you receive a PCN and believe the sign was unclear or you were in an exempt category, you can appeal through the formal appeals process.
Frequently asked questions
Can motorcycles use bus lanes?
Motorcycles are not automatically permitted to use bus lanes. Some local authorities allow motorcycles as a specific local policy, and the sign at the start of the lane will indicate this. If motorcycles are not listed on the sign, they cannot enter during restricted hours.
Are cyclists allowed in bus lanes?
Cyclists are permitted in most bus lanes in the UK, but should check the sign at the start of the lane to confirm access, since a small number exclude them. In both directions on one-way streets with a contraflow bus lane, the sign will indicate whether cyclists are permitted.
What is the fine for driving in a bus lane?
In London the fine is £160, reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days. Outside London, fines are typically between £60 and £90 depending on the council. Bus lane enforcement is mainly camera-based, and the Penalty Charge Notice is sent to the registered keeper of the vehicle.
Can taxis use bus lanes?
Licensed taxis (black cabs and vehicles with a taxi licence from the local authority) are permitted in almost all UK bus lanes. Private hire vehicles dispatched through ride-hailing apps are not automatically permitted - this varies by local authority, and the bus lane sign will confirm what applies locally.
Are bus lanes always active?
No - many bus lanes only operate during peak hours, shown on the sign at the start of the lane. Outside those hours all vehicles can use the lane. Some lanes, particularly in city centres, operate at all times. If no hours are shown on the sign, assume the restriction applies around the clock.
