What is
driving test car insurance?

Driving test insurance is short term learner cover that insures you to drive to, during and from your practical driving test in a car that is not a driving school vehicle.

If you take your test in your instructor's car, their insurance handles the test. But if you use your own car or a family member's, the DVSA requires the vehicle to be insured for the test - and it is your responsibility to make sure it is.

Covertime's learner driver insurance covers your practice sessions and your test day, from one hour up to 90 days. You need a valid UK provisional licence, and the car owner's own insurance must remain active alongside yours.

How much does driving test insurance cost?

The price depends on your age, the car, where you live and how long you need cover for. Because you only buy the hours or days you actually need, test-day cover usually costs far less than being added to an annual policy.

A popular approach is to take cover for the full test day - giving you time for a warm-up drive beforehand and the journey home afterwards - or to combine the test with practice sessions in the weeks before. See our daily learner driver insurance for single-day options.

If you do not pass first time, there is no long-term policy to unwind. You simply buy cover again when your next test date comes around.

Cover that fits around your test

Book cover for the test day itself, or for the run of practice sessions leading up to it. Each policy is independent - if your test moves, you simply buy cover for the new date.

When you pass, the policy ends naturally, because you are no longer a learner. There is nothing to cancel and no notice to give.

Using your own car
for your driving test.

Taking your test in your own car is completely allowed, as long as the vehicle meets the DVSA's rules. Before test day, check your car:

  • Is taxed, insured for the test, and has a valid MOT if it is over three years old
  • Displays L plates on the front and rear
  • Has an extra interior rear-view mirror for the examiner
  • Has a working seatbelt and head restraint for the front passenger
  • Shows no dashboard warning lights and has legal, roadworthy tyres
  • Has an mph speedometer and can reach at least 62mph

Some vehicles are not allowed at all, including certain convertibles and panel vans, and any car under an unresolved safety recall. If the car does not meet the rules on the day, the test is cancelled and the fee is lost.

Is my car insured for a driving test?

Do not assume - check. The DVSA requires the car you take your test in to be insured for the test, and the examiner will ask you to confirm on the day that it is. If it is not, the test does not go ahead and the fee is lost.

A car's existing annual policy covers its named drivers, not you as a learner, unless you have been specifically added. And if you already have learner cover for practice, confirm it includes the test itself before the day.

A short term policy that covers your test removes the doubt: your name, the right car, the right date, with documents you can show on your phone.

What happens to your insurance when you pass?

Learner policies end the moment you pass your driving test - not the next day, and not after the drive home. Once the examiner confirms the pass, you are a qualified driver, and learner cover is no longer valid.

That means you need a plan for getting the car home:

  • A qualified driver who is insured on the car can drive it home
  • Or you can arrange cover as a newly qualified driver before driving yourself

Whatever you do, do not drive home on learner cover after passing - it is not valid cover. Our guide explains what happens to learner insurance when you pass.

Who is
learner driver insurance suitable for?

Driving test insurance vs test drive insurance

They sound similar but are different products. Driving test insurance is learner cover for your DVSA practical test. Test drive insurance covers a qualified driver trying out a car before buying it - for that, see our test drive car insurance page.

If you are here for your practical driving test, you are in the right place - get a learner quote and choose a duration that covers your test day.

Driving test insurance FAQs

Do you need insurance to learn to drive?

Yes. Every drive on a public road must be insured, including supervised practice on a provisional licence. Instructor lessons are covered by the driving school's policy, but private practice in your own or a family member's car needs learner driver insurance arranged before you drive.

Can I take my driving test in my own car?

Yes, as long as it meets the DVSA's rules: taxed, insured for the test, a valid MOT if needed, L plates, an extra interior mirror for the examiner, a working front passenger seatbelt and head restraint, legal tyres and no warning lights. Some convertibles and panel vans are not allowed.

Can I get driving test insurance for one day?

Yes. One-day learner cover is a popular choice for test day - it covers a warm-up drive, the test itself and the journey afterwards. With Covertime you can choose anything from one hour to 90 days, so you can match the cover to exactly what your day involves.

Is my car insured for a driving test automatically?

No. A car's annual policy covers its named drivers, not a learner taking a test, unless you have been specifically added. The examiner will ask you to confirm the car is insured for the test, so check your cover before the day rather than at the test centre.

Can I drive home after passing my test?

Only with valid cover as a qualified driver. Learner policies end the moment you pass, so either a qualified driver insured on the car drives home, or you arrange new cover first. Driving home on learner insurance after passing means driving uninsured.

What happens if I fail my driving test?

Nothing changes with your licence - you remain a learner, and any learner insurance you hold carries on as normal until it expires. You can keep practising on it and book another test. When the new date arrives, simply buy cover for that day if your policy has ended.

Did you know?

Learner cover ends the moment you pass your driving test. Plan how the car gets home before you set off - either a qualified insured driver takes the wheel, or you arrange cover as a newly qualified driver first.
