How long does a provisional driving licence last in the UK?

A provisional driving licence photocard is valid for 10 years from the date it was issued. The right to drive as a learner does not expire in the same way - there is no deadline by which you must pass your test. But two things have their own clocks: the photocard's photograph and your theory test pass. Here is how each one works.

Does a provisional licence expire?

Not in the way most learners worry about. There is no rule requiring you to pass your test within a set number of years. You can hold a provisional licence indefinitely, and your right to drive as a learner remains in place as long as the photocard is kept current.

What does expire is the photocard itself - the physical card has a 10-year validity period printed on the front. Once that date passes, you renew it through the DVLA. The driving entitlement carries over to the new card automatically; you do not lose your learner status by renewing.

The confusion here is understandable. Many learners believe they have a fixed window to pass, or that gaps in lessons invalidate the licence. Neither is true. Whether you took lessons ten years ago and are picking up again, or have been learning steadily for two years, the provisional licence remains valid as long as the photocard is in date and you have not upgraded it to a full licence.

How long is the provisional licence photocard valid?

The photocard is valid for 10 years. The expiry date is printed on the front of the card. If your photocard expires before you pass your test, renew it online through the DVLA before the expiry date rather than after - the DVLA recommends applying at least three weeks before expiry.

Renewal costs £14 online. The replacement card typically arrives within a week. Driving on an expired photocard, even with a valid supervisor, is an offence - the document itself must be current, not just the entitlement behind it.

The renewal is straightforward and does not require a new photograph in the same sense as a passport renewal, though the DVLA does need a current photo. You can do the whole process online at GOV.UK without visiting a post office or DVLA centre.

Does the theory test pass have its own expiry?

Yes, and this is the one that catches learners off guard. Your theory test pass certificate is valid for two years from the date you passed. If you have not completed the practical test within that window, the certificate expires and you must sit the theory test again before booking another practical.

A learner who passes the theory test and then has a gap - moving home, health reasons, a change in circumstances - can find the pass has lapsed when they return. Our guide to how long the theory test pass is valid covers how to manage the timeline if you are approaching the two-year limit.

What happens to a provisional licence at age 70?

At 70, all UK driving licences must be renewed every three years. This applies to provisional as well as full licences, and the process is the same regardless of whether the holder has ever passed a test. For the overwhelming majority of learners this is not a practical concern, but it is the mechanism by which the entitlement eventually requires renewal rather than running indefinitely.

At 70, a medical self-declaration is also required as part of the renewal. The DVLA sends a reminder before the renewal is due, so you should not miss it. After 70, the same three-year renewal cycle continues for as long as you hold a driving licence of any kind.

What if you lose your provisional licence?

Apply for a replacement through the DVLA online. The cost is £20. You do not lose any progress toward the practical test or your learner status - the replacement provides a new photocard with the same underlying entitlement. Our guide to replacing a lost driving licence covers the process for both provisional and full licence holders.

If your provisional was stolen, report it to the police first and obtain a crime reference number. You may need this when applying for the replacement, and it protects you if the stolen card is misused. The replacement is otherwise the same process whether the card was lost, damaged, or stolen.

Can you drive abroad on a provisional licence?

No. A UK provisional licence does not allow you to drive abroad. It is valid only in Great Britain for supervised learner driving under UK rules. To drive in another country you need a full UK licence. Our guide to UK driving licence types explains the full and provisional categories and what changes when you upgrade from one to the other.

What to do as your photocard approaches expiry

Renew online at GOV.UK through the DVLA service before the date shown on the card. Have your passport photo and National Insurance number ready. The fee is £14 and the replacement card arrives within a week.

If you are using a friend's or family member's car for supervised private practice, learner driver insurance covers you for sessions without affecting the car owner's annual policy or no-claims bonus.
